JLF Architects: Timeless designed meets unparalleled craftsmanship

JLF Architects offers a different way to create an architectural legacy. As a master team of passionate Bozeman architects collaborating with Big-D Signature’s skilled Jackson Hole builders, they combine four decades of experience to empower visionary artisans with visionary clients. Through trust, integrity, artistry and communication they build houses that are at once timeless and effortlessly contemporary.

JLF Architects began in 1979 when principal Paul Bertelli joined forces with Jonathan L. Foote in Montana. The duo designed houses to honor the quality of the Rocky Mountain West, incorporating salvaged 100-year-old hand-hewn barn timbers, weathered siding and century-old recycled floor boards. The intention was to respect the past with design that would stand the test of time.

“The notion of designing within a single architectural style is not in our vocabulary,” says JLF Architects principal Paul Bertelli, “Our work is critical and therefore we craft elements to suit each place, region and each client in their own time.”

Maintaining the fundamentals of landscape and craftsmanship, JLF remains grounded in honest materials and respect for regional context, scale, comfort and simplicity. Following Jon Foote’s retirement, JLF Architects evolved from its earliest log and timber structures and expanded its palette of materials to incorporate wood, stone, glass and steel in architectural designs that respond to the landscape across the country, referencing local history and geography within clean-lined contemporary residences.

Over time, JLF paired with Big-D Signature on projects, turning to the firm, established in 1967, for its defining quality and craftsmanship. “Our goal is to be the best business in the construction industry,” declares Jack Livingood, CEO of Big-D.

As a general contractor, Big-D Signature Group maintains a roster of experienced builders, artisans and journeyman to deliver construction that is on time and on budget. Each building is customized through handcrafted detail for the client, the site and the budget and infused with a level of craftsmanship that incorporates the best building traditions with modern engineering technology. Applying their method of sole-source construction management for custom residences translates to an integrated project delivery program facilitated by communication between design and construction. The Big-D approach has resulted in over 200 successful projects in both commercial and residential markets throughout the U.S.

“We built our culture based on trust,” Jack Livingood, CEO of JLF Design Build.

In 2001 the team united, pairing in the design-build process to create timeless structures rooted in integrity and simple elegance. Their award-winning perspective is powered by inspired design and an exacting eye for placement, an ethos that stems from a unity of nature, beauty, balance and imagination.

Unlike a traditional top-down model of architect as dictator, the JLF Architects and Big-D Signature design-build relationship ensures a seamless manifestation of the client’s vision through transparent reporting, honest promises and quality-control. Forging a unilateral relationship that is collaborative, communicative and essentially more creative based on the shared vision of the team. Ultimately the design-build approach gives the client the freedom to build a legacy, an unforgettable experience creating a house that will become the home for many memories in the years to come.
