JLF SIGNATURE ELEMENTS: INTELLECTUAL INTERLUDES—Studies + Libraries

JLF Architects Bozeman Montana Jackson Wyoming

A study provides a refuge from seasonal flux.

Fickle spring, how you mess with our emotions. So eager to play outside, we find ourselves thwarted by lingering storms and thawing conditions. Undaunted, we retreat to our libraries and our studies, the spaces that transcend structural strictures by encouraging our minds to explore unfettered as our bodies do in warmer weather.

VALLEY RUN

An early 19th century Dutch farmstead in Bucks County, Pennsylvania offered a storied canvas upon which to layer elements. The study speaks to such commingling, thus serving as a setting singularly attuned to investigating both history and modernity.

 CASA DE LOS PEREGRINOS

A residence devoted to creativity: No detail escaped the attention of our art-attuned clients, whom commissioned more than 300 artisans to help realize their residential dream. Consider the spiral staircase leading downstairs: the column, sheathed in abstracted bark and leaves, suggests the layers of meaning that lie ahead in the library.

HOME OF THE YEAR

A home designed as “open arms” embracing the hillside also embraces function and context. The study speaks to such blending of beauty and practicality: the long desk—built into the stone walls and rimmed in metal—provides plenty of room for working, and yet, its silhouette belies its size, underscoring the vista rather than distracting from it.

INDIAN SPRINGS

Amid the bustle of this family basecamp, the office offers a moment of respite and reflection. Reflective of the hybrid expressed throughout the house, the room folds contemporary elements into a rustic envelope of stone and timber. Productivity feels truly fulfilling in this balanced space.
